Two massive uninhabitable zones could spread into once-temperate regions of the Northern
and Southern Hemispheres.
Snow pack and aquifers that fed some of the world’s great cities — Los
Angeles, Cairo, Lima, Bombay — are drying out.
At plus 5°C, climate refugees would likely number in the tens of millions, and the
potential for conflict over scarce resources rises, including in the United States (e.g., water disputes in the
Southwest, refugees from hurricanes like Katrina). But, per the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
report, poorer countries would be affected disproportionately.
